ABOUT THE CLASS
Curious about what your child will be learning this year? California’s Common Core State Standards (CCSS) form the backbone for the course. The standards for grade 8 cover the history of the United States through industrialism: the founding of our nation, the growth of American democracy, the Civil War that divided us, the diverse cultures that have enriched our society, the transformation of the United States into an industrial nation.
GRADES
Grades in class are calculated by percentages.
98 - 100%= A+ 93 - 97% = A 90-92% A-
88 - 89% = B+ 83 - 87% = B 80-82% B-
78 - 79% = C+ 73 - 77% = C 70-72% C-
68 - 69% = D+ 63 – 67% = D 60-62% D-
0 - 59% = F
Final grade based on:
50% Assessments: exams and quizzes
30% Classwork and homework.
20% Projects
EXAMS AND PROJECTS
50% of the total grade will be determined by exams and quizzes and 20% on projects. Chapter tests occur approximately every 1-3 weeks and are posted well in advance. Any student earning a grade of less than 70% on any chapter test will be given the opportunity to improve their grade.
HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK
Homework is assigned throughout the week and students are expected to write their homework and assignments in their agenda. All homework assignments are clearly written daily on the board. Classwork that is not completed in class will be assigned as homework and will be due after the chapter test. When absent, any missing work must be made up within the number of days absent.
Late work will be accepted up to one week before the end of the quarter at a lower grade! Classwork and homework should be neat, clearly written or typed, and not crumpled. If these standards are not met, students will be asked to redo the assignment.
SUPPLIES
Though students will be provided with all the materials they need to have a productive year, I am asking students to bring to class the following supplies: one 3 ring binder (3 inch 3 ring binder is recommended), agenda, subject dividers, zippered pouch, 2 or more blue/black pens, 2 or more pencils, 1 highlighter, 1 eraser, filler paper, a red pen, 8 ½ x 11 ruled notebook (70-100 pgs.)
